Vitamin C Foods Are Vital to Your Health

Vitamin C Foods are some of the most essential foods you may ever eat. However, before we delve into all the wonderful Vitamin C foods there are in this world..lets discuss some facts on Vitamin C.

vitamin c foods, oranges Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is essential to proper health. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and is vital to many body functions, especially the building of collagen.

Most animals produce their own Vitamin C....but humans (among bats, guinea pigs and some primates) aren't so lucky. We need Vitamin C from dietary sources and a deficiency causes scurvy.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means that excess vitamin C is eliminated in urine and Vitamin C can not be stored in fat. Therefore, we need to consume Vitamin C on a regular basis.

ESTER-C; 1000 mg with Citrus Bioflavenoids is one particularly popular form of Vitamin C supplement.

There is much controversy over what dose of Vitamin C is needed for proper health. The Recommended Daily Allowance in the United States, set forth by the National Academy of Sciences, is 60-95 mg/day. u Yes, this dosage will prevent scurvy. But, is more needed for optimum health?

That is the 50,000 dollar question it seems. Linus Pauling used 6,000-18,000 mg/day for his daily use. u The Vitamin C Foundation recommends at least 3000 mg/day. The Linus Pauling Institute recommends 400 mg/day,u while the Colorado Integrative Medical Center recommends 6000-12000 mg/day. u

Confused?!?!?! Join the club. There are LOTS of differing opinions out there. Personally, what I do is take 1000 mg/day on a regular basis and then up that to 5000-7000 mg/day if I'm fighting a cold, or trying to avoid getting a cold. I prefer Vitamin C in the form of sodium ascorbate powder, as sodium ascorbate is easier on the stomach in large doses.

Stephen Lawson of the Linus Pauling Institute states "The accumulated evidence demonstrates that vitamin C, even in large amounts, is a remarkably safe substance" .v

Vitamin C Side Effects: The most common side effect of too much Vitamin C is diarrhea or indigestion. 4,u Other possible side effects involve iron poisoning in people with a rare iron overload disorder. There are some sources that state kidney stones may form if large doses of Vitamin C are taken on a regular basis, but no direct link has been found u, and other sources disprove that and claim that Vitamin C may dissolve kidney stones. v

However, very high levels of Vitamin C, taken extremely early during pregnancy may cause miscarriageu. Play it safe if you're newly pregnant. However, later in pregnancy, Vitamin C is particularly beneficial. It strengthen the amniotic membrane and is protective against premature rupture of the membranes.

Vitamin C Foods : Hippocrates said "Let Your Food Be Your Medicine and Your Medicine Be Your Food." With that in mind, WHAT foods can one eat to get lots and lots and lots of Vitamin C? Everyone knows about oranges, limes and lemons, but did you know that Brussels Sprouts have more C than oranges?

The following lists of Vitamin C Foods should help you choose which foods can be your best medicine. However, the numbers are only approximate. Some foods were analyzed dried, while others were analyzed fresh, which can make comparisons difficult. See Source reference u.
