Toothache Home Remedies to Relieve Pain and Fight Infection
Toothache home remedies are pretty much a necessity at one point or another for most people. Suffering through a toothache is NOT fun, and few people can do it patiently. Furthermore, tooth issues ALWAYS happen on a Friday evening, and usually before a long weekend at that!
Tooth pain can have a variety of causes, including:
Cavities: Cavities are caused by bacteria, usually Streptococcus mutans, eroding the hard enamel on the teeth. 5 Poor diet and genetics can make the hard enamel "softer" in some people. This makes them more prone to cavities.
An abscessed tooth is especially painful and can be dangerous. If you have lots of pain and swelling due to pus accumulating around the gums, you may have an abscess 5and should seek medical care.
Teeth that don't have enough room to come in may become impacted.
Sinus problems5 can be a surprising cause of tooth pain. The problem actually isn't with the teeth, but rather an infection in the sinuses.
If your teeth are widely spaced (generally this is a good thing, you don't want a crowded mouth), occasionally small bits of food, (especially stringy, fibrous foods like celery) can get stuck between your teeth causing irritation and pain. This happens to me with some frequency. Floss frequently to avoid this issue, and be thankful your mouth has plenty of space in it.
Diet plays a HUGE role in oral health. Yes, oral hygiene is important, but poor diet leaves the teeth more susceptible to decay. Decay happens from the inside out; if the body is deficient in vitamins and minerals, they will be pulled from certain stores, like the teeth. This leaves the teeth softer and more vulnerable to bacteria and decay. Click here to read an excellent article discussing the role diet plays in oral health.Note: Certain medications such as antihistamines, painkillers, decongestants and diuretics can decrease saliva production. This makes you more susceptible to cavities. Saliva production plays an important role in washing away bacteria and preventing cavities. 5

White Willow provides natural pain relief, without the risk associated with aspirin. The easiest way to use white willow for pain relief is to make a strong tea (1 tablespoon of herb steeped for 30 minutes). Once cooled, use as a mouth rinse. Hold the tea in your mouth as long as possible, to really let it soak into the tooth. 2 Do not drink this tea; it is meant to be used as a mouth rinse only.
