Thyme Tea and Thyme Oil

It was also traditionally given to Jamaican women after childbirth to help expel the placenta. ac

Thymol is the active ingredient in thyme, and the main component of thyme essential oil. 14,ac.

Thyme herb is frequently found in lotions and baths. Dried thyme is often used to keep insects away from linens. 14

Thyme is an antiseptic. It expels both gas and worms from the body 14, and the ancient Greeks used it as a fumigator. 14, ac Thyme also stops muscle spasms, making it very useful in the treatment of asthma, whooping cough and stomachache. 14

To make thyme tea: Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried thyme leaves. If using fresh thyme, double the amount. Cover tightly and steep for 15-20 minutes. Strain and drink.

Warning: Essential oils are NOT meant to be taken internally. Do not take thyme essential oil internally, doing so may cause nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea or muscle weakness. Thyme essential oil taken internally may depress the heart, lungs and body temperature while stimulating the thyroid. 14

Do not use red thyme essential oil. Do not use white or common thyme essential oil if you have high blood pressure. 2

Otherwise, thyme is generally regarded as safe.2 If you are breastfeeding, mother-of-thyme has a plant safety rating of 'B'. May not be appropriate for self-use by some individuals or dyads, or may cause adverse effects if misused. Seek reliable safety and dose information. 6 It also has the possibility to be allergenic.

Lemon-thyme has a plant safety rating of 'A'. No contraindications, side effects, drug interactions or pregnancy-related safety issues have been identified. Generally considered safe when used appropriately. 6
