Safe, Natural and Effective Home Remedies for Head Lice
Home Remedies for Head Lice! I bet just reading about head lice is making your head itch...that always happens to me! Most parents dread the thought of lice, however, if your child does come down with head lice, there are head lice home remedies that will help.
Head lice can strike any child (or adults...but mostly children) irregardless of race, gender or socio-economic class and is not indicative of the cleanliness of the child. It is most frequently spread through classrooms and daycares. What are lice? Lice are little gray insects, about the size of a sesame seed (yep..THAT small!).
They suck the blood of its victim, preying on human scalp and hair. They do not transmit disease, yet do leave behind their saliva which causes the itching associated with lice. They also leave behind their tiny, white eggs, called nits. In addition to being found on the scalp, nits are sometimes found behind the ears and on the neck. Nits can sometimes be mistaken for dandruff, however, the two can be easily distinguished by blowing on the head. Dandruff will blow off easily while nits will not. Head lice are more frequently spread when children share combs, brushes, headgear, headphones, hats or headbands. Do be sure to wash all of the affected child's pillows, pillowcases, sheets, blankets, quilts, towels, linens, stuffed animals and clothes separately from other family members items in super, super, super hot water. This is one of the most important home remedies for head lice...you need to treat your home as well! If you can't easily wash/dry an item, then place it in a sealed plastic bag and set in the garage or on a porch for at least 2-3 weeks. This is the amount of time it takes for the nits to hatch and the lice to die (from lack of food). Vacuum all couches, mattresses, carpets and car seats very thoroughly and throw away the vacuum bag when finished. Wash the hair with white vinegar and then thoroughly use a lice comb to pick through and remove all nits. You can also leave vinegar on overnight. Olive oil, mayonnaise, and peanut butter are all home remedies for head lice. Use them in a similar fashion as the mineral oil, but again, they can be quite messy to wash out, and you will still need to remove the nits manually with a nit comb.1Head Lice and Tea Tree Oil: You may have heard about using tea tree oil to treat head lice. Mix 1/3-1/2 cup of olive oil with 8-10 drops of 100% Pure Essential Tea Tree Oil and massage into the scalp, covering all parts. Cover the scalp with a plastic shower cap and leave on at least 30 minutes and then wash with shampoo.
