Home Remedies for Earache and Ear Infection....Safe, Natural and Effective Relief and Healing

When you think of home remedies for earache, do you think of little kids with olive oil soaked cotton balls hanging out of their ears? Believe or not, those olive oil soaked cotton balls actually do work....and so do the other home remedies for earache you will find on this page!

Like most aches and pains, earaches tend to strike in the middle of the night...usually Friday night before a long weekend when all the doctor's offices are closed of course. This is due to pure physical reasons (well the night-time part that is, not the weekend part). The Eustachian tubes in your ears naturally drain during the day as you move around, talk and eat. However, at night gravity no longer works in your favor and those tubes can become easily clogged.

Earaches have several different causes....allergies, colds and atmospheric pressure changes (ie. from airline travel) often cause earaches.

Otitis media is the most common cause of earaches in children...this in an infection of the middle ear. Some children seem to be especially prone to ear infections.

External otitis, or infection of the ear canal...sometimes called swimmer's ear is another common cause of earaches.

Determining the cause of an earache can be important for finding the right home remedy.

If the cause in an infection, infection fighting substances will be especially important.

Warning: See your doctor if you or your child has a fever which lasts for several days, a severe headache, ear discharge, hearing loss, dizziness, swelling, or worsening pain around the ear.

For babies and children....breastfeeding and avoiding large day care settings are the most important factors in the prevention of earaches and ear infections. 4

Smoking is also a factor in ear infections..so if you smoke..this is one more reason to quit. And surprisingly enough, wood-burning stoves are also a factor. The smoke and soot from a wood-burning stove is irritating to the respiratory system. 4

Swimmer's Ear prevention: Place a few drops of baby oil, mineral oil or olive oil in the ears before swimming. This will help prevent water from entering the ear canal. After swimming, place a few drops of apple cider vinegar 2 or rubbing alcohol inside the ears. 4 These will both dry out any moisture and kill any bacteria or fungus that get in the ears. 4 These two home remedies for earache can be used alone or be combined into a 50/50 solution of vinegar and rubbing alcohol. 5

However, if despite these preventive strategies, you or your child still comes down with an earache or ear infection, try one of these time-tested home remedies for ear infection.

  • This is probably the easiest home remedy to use. EarHeal is a natural antibiotic alternative. Get more info on Ear-Heal - Natural ear ache home remedy. For children, try Eddy Ear Sprinkles. Get more info on Eddy Ear Sprinkles - Proven natural herbal earache remedies for toddler ear infections
  • Warm a little bit of mineral oil or baby oil to body temperature (in a pan of warm water). Place a drop in each ear. 4Oil of camphor will also work quite well 1 as will olive oil.
  • Garlic Oil works exceedingly well. It is one of my favorite home remedies for earache. Place a few drops of garlic oil in the ear. 4 A cotton ball (there's those cotton balls again!)..will keep the oil from coming out. Garlic is by far my favorite home remedy...that's because due to its natural microbial action, garlic cures many things. You can buy Garlic Oil or make your own. Peel a few cloves of fresh garlic and crush then finely. Place in a jar, cover with olive oil and let sit for several days...shaking the jar several times a day each day. Strain with a cotton strainer and store the garlic oil in a cool, dry place. 1
  • Mullein Oil is also antimicrobial and works similar to garlic. You can use mullein oil by itself or in combination with garlic oil. 4 Sometimes you can even find commercial preparations combining both oils. Again...a cotton ball will keep the oil from falling out. Together, these two home remedies for earache are sure to eliminate that nasty infection.
  • Calendula Oil is another one of the best home remedies for earache. Calendula oil can be mixed with equal parts of garlic oil and mullein oil. Use this mixture for both swimmer's ear and regular old ear infections. Learn more about the calendula flower.

  • Try the hot sock treatment. Yes, this does involve a hot sock...hopefully a clean one! Heat a cup of salt on the stove and then pour the hot salt into a sock. Tie off the ends, and (after making sure the sock isn't so hot it will burn the skin), place the sock on the sore ear. The heat is very soothing and will provide relief. 1
  • Place 4 drops of a 50% diluted solution of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar into the sore ear. The vinegar will both fight the infection and help the ears drain. 1

  • If you don't have an ear infection, but simply clogged ears, try the Valsalva maneuver. To perform this maneuver, take a deep breath and hold it. Close your mouth, pinch your nose and gently blow. 5 Your ears will seem to magically unclog themselves.
  • If you have swimmer's ear, use a 50/50 diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide in each ear. 2

  • Essential Oils are great home remedies for earache. Add a few drops of Basil Essential Oil or Tea Tree Pure Essential Oil to olive oil and place in the ear. Use those cotton balls again to keep the oil from spilling out. Learn more about tea tree oil uses.
