Ginseng Benefits You....Learn the Many Health Benefits of the Ginseng Plant!

Ginseng benefits have long been known. In fact, wars have been fought over this little plant. The Chinese and the Tartars shed blood over the right to ginseng-rich land.

ginseng plant, ginseng picture Chinese legend teaches that a sweet young wife was having trouble conceiving a child. She dreamed about an old man in the mountains who could heal her with herbs. Of course she traveled up the mountain and received healing herbs (ginseng) and then conceived and bore a child. When she went back to thank him, she was so sweet and kind, that he populated the woods with this miracle-producing plant. 14

When ginseng is mentioned, it usually refers to Panax ginseng which encompasses the genus Panax. Siberian ginseng actually belongs to an entirely different genus and is not a "true ginseng" The active components of Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng) are ginsenosides. ar

In fact, American Ginseng is very effective, and I always prefer herbs that are as local as possible.

Ginseng root is most frequently used, however, ginseng leaf is used as well. The leaves actually contain higher levels of ginsenocides than the root do. ar

Wondering what is ginseng good for? Ginseng is said to enlighten the mind, provide wisdom and long life...not to mention its aphrodisiac qualities. No wonder ginseng has traditionally been in such high demand. In fact, back in the 1700's ginseng sold for the very high price of $5/pound. That was quite the chunk of change back then! 14

It has been said that ginseng benefits almost every ailment. This may be due to its anti-inflammatory effects. ar However, the greatest ginseng health benefits are that it is an "adaptogen"....this means it protects against both physical and mental stress. It helps the body return to a normal state. Since everyone gets stressed at times, ginseng seems to be pretty universally helpful. 14

Ginseng benefits those with anemia, atherosclerosis, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure and ulcers. Of course, there is also the plant's aforementioned aphrodisiac qualities. Many people believe that ginseng benefits libido.

Studies have shown that ginseng promotes sperm formation in rabbits, ovary growth in frogs and egg-laying in hens. 14 Ginseng benefits athletes! Studies show that ginseng increases endurance, the ability to do work and aerobic capacity. 15

Studies conducted on rats show that ginseng has the potential to protect cells from radiation damage. Rats that were treated with ginseng before radiation exposure lived twice as long as expected. 14 In vivo studies conducted with human cells showed a similar protective measure of ginseng against radiation stress. ap However, some studies have shown that ginseng seems to be most effective when it is combined with other Chinese herbs. ar

A few studies have concentrated on ginseng and breast cancer. Several in vitro studies have shown that ginseng inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells. ap Ginseng has also been shown to improve the quality of life...especially in the social and psychological arena of those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. ap However, despite these positive effects, ginseng does have estrogenic capabilities, so it is generally recommended for women with a history of breast cancer to only use ginseng under the careful supervision of a medical professional.

So..with all these positive benefits of ginseng...is it worth the money to drink ginseng flavored drinks? Unfortunately, oftentimes they do not contain enough ginseng to be of medicinal value. ar You would be better off taking a high-quality ginseng supplement or drinking Korean Ginseng Tea.

Ginseng Dosage: Dosages very quite a bit. To make tea, use 1/2 teaspoon of dried root no more than twice a day. Studies conducted using ginseng supplements have used doses of anywhere from 100-500 mg of extract. Always follow package instructions when using ginseng supplements.

Ginseng Side Effects: Insomnia is sometimes reported as a side effect of ginseng. One study showed that people taking large doses of ginseng for two or more years complained of diarrhea, nervousness, high blood pressure and skin problems. 15 With ginseng, it is extremely important to know the source of the herb and only buy from reputable sources. There have been instances of "ginseng" causing severe side effects, but after further examination it was discovered that the ginseng was contaminated with other herbs. 15

Safety Guidelines for the Ginseng Herb: Do not take ginseng if you have heart disease or are taking prescription medications without consulting your doctor. Discontinue use if any skin rashes or problems occur. If you are breastfeeding, ginseng is assigned a plant safety rating of 'B'. May not be appropriate for self-use by some individuals or dyads, or may cause adverse effects if misused. Seek reliable safety and dose information. 6 Traditional Chinese medicine frequently used ginseng in the treatment of mastitis and fatigue in breastfeeding mothers, however, it is wise to consult an expert herbalist before using ginseng if you are breastfeeding.
