Find a Natural Bee Sting Treatment

Ouch!! A sting by a bee or wasp is painful and scary! The best bee sting treatment will provide fast pain relief while reducing swelling and inflammation.

bee sting treatment

Warning: If you or the sting victim, experience any shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, clamminess, sudden weakness or pale skin color, call 911 immediately.

  • Immediately apply ice or cold water to the sting. This provides fast pain relief.

  • Make a paste of baking soda and water to reduce swelling and inflammation. 1 Apply to the site for 15-20 minutes. You can also add witch hazel to this paste for additional anti-inflammatory help.2
  • I've had great success using witch hazel medicated pads (you know, the ones they sell for hemorrhoids), on bee stings. They are soothing, cool and NOT messy. Perfect for kids!.
  • St. John's Wort Oil, Fresh Papaya or Meat Tenderizer (make sure it contains papain and no added seasonings) can be mixed with water or Betonite Clay to make a paste which will draw out the venom. 2 Learn more about the benefits of St Johns Wort.
  • Sage Tea is an astringent and can be rubbed on any insect sting.1 Learn more about the sage plant.
  • Another popular bee sting treatment is to make a chamomile compress using chamomile tea leaves and cold water. Apply to the site for as long as possible. Then apply a drop of Chamomile Essential Oil Blend to the site three times/day. 1 Learn more about chamomile tea benefits.
  • For wasp and yellow jacket stings wash the area first with cider or wine vinegar. See more about apple cider vinegar and honey.2
  • Aloe vera is a very popular and effective anti-itch home remedy.2 You can either buy aloe vera gel, or grow your own. If you grow your own, simply pick one of the leaves and rub it on the sting. Learn more about medicinal uses of aloe vera.
  • Other effective bee sting remedies include, Calendula Cream or a tincture made of echinacea and goldenseal. 1
  • Place the crushed leaves of the mint plant on the site of the sting.14
  • Onion and garlic both contain powerful antibacterial properties. A cut onion can be placed on the sting for fast relief. If you prefer to use garlic, crush a raw garlic bulb and mix it with coconut oil or olive oil (never put raw, crushed garlic directly on the skin as it can burn). 2 Learn more about garlic cures.
  • A drop of pure lavender oil applied directly to the sting will also provide quick relief and speed healing. 2
  • Of course, bee stings usually occur outside or away from home, where you may not have any of these remedies handy. If this is the case, rub marigold flowers on the sting (if you are sure they weren't sprayed with pesticides) or just pack plain old mud on it...which is also very effective. 1

Kid Tip: Insect stings can be especially scary for kids. If your child gets stung by a bee or wasp, the first order of business should be to calm them down. Some kids respond well to soothing stories and lots of hugs and cuddles. Other children might enjoy drawing pictures or writing a story about the incident afterward, to help them process what happened.

Some children respond to an obviously exaggerated response, which a bit silly (hands on hips, and talking in a stern voice "that mean ole' bee, how DARE he sting you!"

To help a child keep a bee sting treatment on the sting site, try putting the paste on and then loosely tying a piece of cloth around the affected body part....just to keep wandering hands from wiping the paste off or touching it. Quiet stories might also help a child sit still for awhile.

I didn't see Apis (homeopathic) or plantain mentioned. Plantain is great for stings. Chew some up and spit it out and apply to the sting. :)

Rub an aspirin on your bee sting to reduce inflammation  Not rated yet
I have always heard you can rub an aspirin tablet (uncoated ones would work best) on your bee sting to help reduce inflammation.
